STWM alumni do well in Dubai; Francis & Reid visit them in Kenya!

Lydia Cheromei passes the Princes Gates, ~17km into STWM2009

January 25th. I mentioned on Saturday how nice it is to follow some of our STWM alumni and see how well they are doing around the world. It always seems gratifying to know that wherever they go, whatever great heights they achieve, they’ll always have “STWM” on their running resume. They’ve shared their running with us, and ours and our city, our country with them.

On Friday, Lydia Cheromei and Atsede Bayisa both placed in the top 5 in the “world’s richest marathon” in Dubai. Lydia ran especially well, with a big PR for 2nd place in 2:23:01, and $100,000 in prize money! Atsede was 5th in 2:25:08.

And we wonder if they ever remember Toronto…?

Francis Coral-Mellon — the talented young guy who does most of our STWM and Canada Running Series videos for is currently in Kenya filming and sent us the following note:

“I was at the camp of [athlete manager] Gianni Demadonna when this race [Dubai] was run; the coach Gabrielle and the camp were celebrating having I think 6 women in the top 10 in Dubai! including Lydia.”

“I am talking to a lot of guys over here about Toronto, who have run it before!  They think it is a fast course with the possibility of a 2:06 with good pacemaking and weather!! Regards from Kenya!!”

While we’re on this track, I heartily recommend checking out some of Francis’ new videos that are starting to appear from his trip. His latest one is on the Grand Opening of the Martin Lel School. We’re definitely looking forward to some of the videos Francis and Matt shoot for us, showing more of the lives of our Kenyan athlete/STWM alumni. Stay tuned…

Coincidentally, Speed River’s Reid Coolsaet is also over in Kenya doing soem training and staying in Lorna Kiplagat’s camp. Read his blog posts for more Toronto/STWM/Kenya ties. Read about Reid’s hanging out with Asbel Kiprop, Duncan Kibet and “Geofrey Mutai [who] lives just by us” …taking a matatu to watch the major Discovery XC race in Eldoret this past Sunday, 5 people on a motorbike, Shoe4Africa, and more….
