Why I Love Running. By Joanne Krol

I spent the first 5 months of 2013 running A LOT, training for the Vancouver BMO Marathon. After completing my first marathon (YA!), I cut back a bit to running 5K 3 times a week. Just last week I was feeling a bit off. All week I was agitated, busy running errands, yet feeling like I wasn’t getting anything done! I knew something was off, but I couldn’t figure out what it was.

All of a sudden, it clicked: I missed running! I missed the routine of my daily runs. I missed lacing up my shoes and getting out the door. I missed exploring new routes and trails along the coast. I missed having goals, intentions, and something specific to train for. When I sat down to write this blog, all the reasons I loved running came back to me. I felt like I had a fresh new outlook, and I was ready to start running harder again.

Running creates the routine in my day. It is the consistent practice that I look forward to. Running for me is carefree, I lace up my shoes and step out the door. After a run, I feel on top of the world, no matter what.

No matter what predicament I may face at the beginning of my day, after a run I come home with a whole new perspective and a brighter attitude. Sometimes after a run, things that seemed like big issues become no issues at all. Running allows me to let things go and release my energy in a positive way. I can honestly say that running is like meditation for me – I listen to my breath, clear my head, and enjoy time spent just with myself.

When I run, I never feel like stressed at the end of my day. My sleep is immaculate and I feel so fulfilled every night before going to bed.  Running makes me a happy, optimistic, energetic individual. Coupled with my yoga practice, I couldn’t think of a better way to stay balanced and I couldn’t imagine the person I would be without it.

I just took a little break after running 5 half marathons in 7 months (and they were my first halfs ever!). While I admit I did love being a little lazy for just over two weeks, it was amazing how I felt so much better after getting out for some short runs this past week. Running allows you to both relax mentally and energize physically. It makes you set goals for yourself and gives structure to your daily life. It makes you push yourself beyond your preconceived limits and it gives you the opportunity to celebrate your accomplishments. It is such a simple activity yet it offers so much.

Can’t wait to run my very first marathon at STWM this fall!
