VANCOUVER, BC. Canada Running Series has announced that there will be $1,000 bonuses for new Course Records at the first edition of their Vancouver Eastside 10k, to be run on Saturday, September 14th. The bonuses are part of an attractive total purse of more than $8,000 that will make it one of the top 3 competitive 10k events in British Columbia, alongside the SunRun and Victoria’s Times Colonist 10k. “Of course we wanted to have a bit of fun with the first edition of the race and build some excitement – there HAVE to be new course records for the brand new event!” said Race Director Clif Cunningham. “And this effort goes all the way through this first Eastside 10k. We have some really distinctive Finishers’ medals and quality technical t-shirts for everyone, not just the fast people up front. Plus we’ll be bringing you the quality race-organization that everyone associates with Canada Running Series from events like the Scotiabank Vancouver Half Marathon and Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon.”

The prize monies will also be focused strongly on supporting Canadian and regional, British Columbian runners. This is an important feature across the Canada Running Series, which is currently helping sponsor the Canadian Marathon squad to the World Championships in Moscow that begins on Saturday. The squad includes Vancouver-based Rob Watson as well as Ontario’s Lanni Marchant and Krista DuChene. All three competed in the Scotiabank Vancouver Half in June as their final tune up for Moscow. “Canada Running Series is strongly committed to helping Canadians – helping local runners progress to national competition, and the national calibre athletes get onto the international stage and represent our country well,” said Cunningham. “The Vancouver Eastside 10k also aims to promote an active, healthy lifestyle for a broad range of fitness folks, on a flat, fast course, as well as attracting some of the country’s best distance runners.”

10k Canadian Runners Division (Men & Women) will receive:

First Place $800. Second Place $500. Third Place $300. Fourth Place $200. Fifth Place $100

$1000 Bonuses will be up for grabs for the top Canadian Male and Female, by setting the first Course Record winning time! In the Men’s competition, this amount will be reduced by 25% if the time is slower than 29:00, by 50% if slower than 30:00 and by 75% if slower than 31:00. In the Canadian Women’s competition, the $1000 course record bonus will be reduced by 25% if the time is slower than 33:00, by 50% if slower than 34:00 and by 75% if slower than 35:00.

The distinctive Finishers' Medal features the iconic Gastown Flatiron Building

Top runners in each 5 year age category from 15 to 100 will also be recognized, with medals of accomplishment and all runners regardless of place will receive a unique finishers’ medal.

The Eastside 10k will start on the Dunsmuir Viaduct near Vancouver’s Roger’s Arena, head east on Prior to Raymur, then back for a loop of Gastown before returning to the finish line (MAP).

The event is also supporting three important community charities in the Vancouver Eastside; the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre, Watari Support and Counselling and the Greater Vancouver Food Bank. Participants can fundraise online prior to the event and donate canned foods and toiletries for the Eastside community as listed on the event website.

The inaugural edition is already 50% sold out, en route to a cap of 2,000 participants. Those interested in being part of this exciting new run on the Vancouver scene are encouraged to enter without delay! Elite athletes can apply for complimentary entry and support through the website.
