This year, we’re particularly pleased to welcome Gary and Buddug Lloyd Davies from Aberystwyth, Wales, among our usual, strong contingent of runners from the UK at Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon.
Toronto Waterfront will be Gay’s 20th marathon, and part of an extraordinary challenge he’s undertaking to run 24 marathons in 12 months this year, to help raise funds for Cancer Research UK. In something of a contrast, this will be Buddug’s first-ever marathon. They are coming to Toronto courtesy of Canadian Affair, after winning our Free Prize Draw, “Trip for 2 to STWM 2013”, at the Virgin London Marathon Expo in April. More than 1500 entered the draw, and the Davies’ were the lucky winners!
“Gary’s challenge began on New Year’s Day in Liverpool,” says Buddug. “He decided to raise money for Cancer Research UK for many reasons. My Mother died from Lung Cancer in November after only being diagnosed in April, and because over the past few years we’ve lost many family members and friends, whilst seen others battle and come through the illness. Hopefully, reaching the target of £10,000, this money will help in trying to find a cure.”
Buddug says she’s only recently started running, after playing field hockey for many years, and competing in tog-of-war competitions! “I ran the Cardiff Half Marathon in 2012,” she says. “And recently I completed Britain’s longest non-stop relay race from London to Cardiff as part of a team of 12, which we completed in 27 hours. I’m really looking forward to competing in my first Marathon in Toronto this year!”
