The Abilities Centre will be a world class recreation, athletic and performing arts facility fully accessible to all persons with special needs and specialized health-care related requirements. It will be a unique facility in that it will welcome all persons with special needs, however defined, along with their families, friends and the community at large. Located in Whitby, Ontario the Abilities Centre will facilitate total barrier free access to active living adjacent to one of the nation's largest municipal sports complex. The construction of the Abilities Centre commenced in May, 2010 and is scheduled to be completed by December 31, 2011.
This is the 4th year the Abilities Centre has participated in the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon. Over the past 3 years we have raised $75,000 and have also won the 3rd place prize for highest per-participant pledged amount each of these years. We are excited to have you join our 2011 team of runners, walkers and wheelers. Our target is to have 50 team participants and to raise $50,000. We can only accomplish this with your support! Send an e-mail message to jayotte@abilitiescentre.org and join our team today! Include your name, phone number, preferred e-mail address, address and date of birth. We'll help get you registered and show you how to set up a fund-raising page using the Artez online fundraising site. If you raise a minimum of $200 we will cover your registration fee ($70.00 half and full marathon participants and $35.00 for 5km participants).
All monies raised will be used towards outfitting the much needed Life Skills area at the Abilities Centre. The facility will provide a full life skills apartment and life skills kitchen, social and training environment to a wide variety of users which will assist in furthering their independence skills. In addition, these participants will have tremendous opportunities to socialize with peers, family members and caregivers in a safe and non-judgmental environment.
