Run or walk to raise funds for AboutFace and help the estimated 1.5 million Canadians living with a facial difference, and growing. Every year in Canada, 10,000 babies are born with a facial difference; an additional 50,000 individuals will acquire a facial disfigurement as a result of trauma or a health issue like cancer or stroke.
In a society that idolizes physical perfection, living with a facial difference can cause barriers to simple things like going to school, making friends, meeting new people, finding a job or going out in public. It is something you cannot hide. Clinical isolation, anxiety and depression are very common mental health issues that affected individuals struggle with and are often caused by social isolation, peer rejection, staring, taunting and bullying. AboutFace is the only national charity that helps individuals with facial differences develop the confidence, skills and self-esteem to break free from isolation and integrate into society.
AboutFace offers a variety of supportive services in-person, through conference calls, camps and retreats to facilitate mental and emotional well-being so that affected individuals can lead productive lives.
As a registered charity that receives no government funding, we take pride in the fact that with every step you take on Sunday, October 20, 2013, you are helping to Encourage, Empower and Educate a child, youth or adult with a facial difference.
