Please support Autism Ontario — Durham Region in the 2013 Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon / Half Marathon & 5k Charity Challenge, taking place on Sunday, October 20th. This will be our seventh year participating in this event, and we need your help to meet our goal of raising $10,000 to support our programs for individuals with autism and their families living in Durham Region.
We participate in the Scotiabank Waterfront Marathon Charity Challenge to help raise awareness about autism, as well as raise much-needed funds to meet the ever-increasing demand for our programs and services offered throughout the year. Every dollar raised through our participation in this event is used to support our programs for families affected by autism, including parent support groups, our summer recreational funding program, autism resources, education and awareness programs, and various social and recreational activities for individuals with autism and their families.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is one of the most common developmental disabilities, yet there is still a great deal of misconceptions and lack of understanding in the community. The prevalence rate of ASD is 1 in 94*. In Ontario, there is an estimated 100,000 individuals with ASD. Autism is a lifelong disability, affecting communication, behaviour and social skills.
