Each year, thousands of Canadian children between the ages of 3 and 17 are diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. Since 1984, The Children's Wish Foundation of Canada has worked tirelessly to grant exceptional wishes to over 18,000 children and their families.
This year, Children's Wish expects to grant 1,000 new wishes and with the help of volunteers and generous donors, is able to grant nearly three wishes every day. Each wish is an individual adventure, carefully structured to meet the needs of a particular child and family. Children's Wish is a grassroots charity with chapters in every province and territory. Currently the Ontario Chapter has over 500 pending wishes and has experienced a record number of wish referrals and requests recently.
For a child whose wish is about to be granted, the pain and discomfort of the illness and often harsh treatment regimes somehow become more bearable. The excitement of planning and anticipating their dream has a dramatic effect on the healing of many children. These courageous youngsters often experience a renewed sense of energy and hope as they see a different kind of light at the end of the tunnel.
Isabelle is seated at the grand piano that is her dream come true.
“The piano that Isabelle received from Children's Wish is a symbol of hope for our family. Because of Isabelle's medical condition, she cannot participate in athletics, but the piano is something she can excel at and is passionate about. It gives her joy and therefore gives joy to us as a family. Every morning that I come downstairs and see the piano, I know that Isabelle will be okay. Isabelle's wish represents hope for the future.”
