The Canadian Pain Coalition (CPC) is THE National Voice of People with Pain. Incorporated in 2004 as a non-profit organization, the CPC is a partnership of pain consumer groups, individuals, health professionals who care for people in pain and scientists studying better ways to treat pain. CPC promotes sustained improvement in the understanding, prevention, treatment and management of all types of pain in Canada. CPC accomplishes this through pain education, awareness activities and advocacy initiatives. CPC obtained the Senate Declaration of National Pain Awareness Week in 2004.
Pennies for Pain our national fundraising and awareness campaign began in 2009. This campaign serves to raise funds for our vital pain education programs and to heighten awareness of pain issues in Canada. Chronic pain can be devastating, debilitating, demoralizing and sometimes deadly. It destroys lives and families. Because chronic pain is misunderstood, undertreated and undermanaged, Canadians suffer needlessly. The fundraising focus of the campaign is to ask people to contribute what they can. They may literally save their pennies or raid their piggy banks. This idea is reflected in the design of the logo. If each of the six million Canadians with pain donated one penny for pain, think of the great work that will be accomplished!
“I just wanted to pass along my thanks. Earlier today I picked up a copy of the Conquering Pain for Canadians — Tips and Information booklet while at my local hospital and wanted to express my appreciation. The information packed into this one comprehensive document has managed to provide me with more information, support and hope regarding the management of my chronic pain than I received from all my health care professionals in the last 18 months. I plan on utilizing the information along with the support of the pain clinic at my local hospital to reclaim my life.”
In 2010, CPC raised over $52,000 with 60 runners/walkers and water station cheer team members. Central Team CPC Pennies for Pain raised over $39,000 and was mentioned at the Charity Challenge Awards. This year, CPC will be hosting the Ontario Place Water Station along the marathon/half marathon route.
