Strong, courageous, determined, hopefulů these are all words we would use to describe the women and children who come to Nellie's. Despite the fact that the most dangerous time for a woman in an abusive relationship is right before she tries to leave, in 2012 over 140 women made the brave decision to leave their homes and come to Nellie's in search of a brighter future. Alone or with children quietly in tow, women make their journey to our shelter in silence, when no one is looking.
With immediate and ongoing support from our counselors, women at Nellie's are provided with crisis support, counseling, advocacy, social education and recreational activities in a secure and nurturing environment. Women are also assisted with finding safe, affordable housing so that they can begin an independent life, free from their abusers. With compassion and understanding, staff employ a holistic approach that embraces our three pillars of shelter, education, and advocacy to help women heal and embrace a new quality of life.
On Sunday October 20th 2013, Nellie's is participating in the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon Charity Challenge for the third year in a row! Last year our amazing team of walkers and runners raised over $17,000 for the women and children at Nellie's. This year we are looking forward to welcoming back our team from last year and inviting new participants to join us! Contact us early to see how you can have your registration fee waived. During the months leading up to the big day we are planning some fun and exciting team building activities and events! If you're not an athlete, you can still participate by making a donation in support of one of our team members or cheering us on from the sidelines! Our goal is to raise $20,000 for Nellie's shelter and community support programs!
Since 1973 we have the honour of helping to rebuild the lives of over 15,000 women and children. On Sunday October 20th we invite you to come out and show your strength, share your courage, prove your determination, and inspire hope in the belief that every woman and child has the right to live a life that is free from violence and oppression. Join us at the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon to run, walk, or wheel to celebrate our champions, the women and children of Nellie's.
