Young Canadians aged 15 to 24 have the highest incidence of mental health disorders of any age group in our country, and suicide is the second leading cause of death for this age group. 1 in 5 children in Ontario struggles with depression, anxiety or substance abuse, and this means that you probably know someone who is experiencing this. Mental illness can strike young people anywhere, at any time, no matter what neighbourhood they live in or what school they attend.
From the day we opened our doors in 1967, empowering youth and their families to enhance their wellbeing and mental health with services that respond to their diverse needs has been Oolagen's guiding principal.
Oolagen is an accredited youth mental health centre that has been helping Toronto youth and their families for more than 40 years. Highly respected for our work, we serve as a University of Toronto teaching facility. Our long-term partners include the Toronto District School Board, Sick Kids Hospital, the Children's Aid Society, the Ministry of Youth and Social Services, as well as other children's mental health agencies and community groups.
Oolagen has helped approximately 50,000 youth overcome the devastating effects of emotional, social and psychological difficulties such as abuse, eating disorders, addictions, family violence, depression and self-harming behaviours. Each year, we reach more than 4,000 Toronto youth and their families through leading edge treatment and prevention programs.
A MOTHER'S WORDS: “I was desperate and didn't know where to turn. Oolagen went out of their way to help us. They listened and made a difference in our family. Thanks to Oolagen, we are getting respite from the stress and worry we've been under for years.”
By supporting Oolagen, the money you raise will go directly to our programs—two Toronto residential treatment facilities, on-site counselling services in three high schools, a Walk-In Clinic, outpatient counselling, our unique Wraparound programs and intensive counselling that provides in-home and community based support and interventions. Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon participants will be recognized on our website, Facebook page and our 2012/2012 Annual Report.
