Sickle Cell Awareness Group of Ontario (SCAGO) is a charitable not for profit organization that started on June 14th, 2005.
It has significantly contributed to the health and well being of many Canadians living with sickle cell disease (SCD).
SCD is a severe genetic blood disorder that affects the red blood cells, causing excruciating pain episodes, other complications such as damage to the vital organs of the body and premature death.
Recent data has shown that over 60% of all Canadians living with SCD reside in Ontario.
SCAGO provides educational outreach across Ontario but most especially within the Greater Toronto Area.
Education on SCD is offered to three groups — Medical & Allied Health Professionals; Sickle Cell Community and the General populace. SCAGO has also played a significant role in lobbying for Bill 175—The Sickle Cell and Thalassemia Care Ontario Act. The Bill 175 would ensure there is comprehensive and coordinated care for individuals living with these disorders.
SCAGO also provides post-secondary scholarships to individuals with SCD and supports patients and their family members with emergency funds.
By joining us to raise $10,000, together we can:
You can still play a big role in this cause even if you're not much of a runner by sponsoring our team! All participants will receive a SCAGO t-shirt for race day. In addition to that, the first 20 participants to sign up get free entry into the race! We look forward to seeing you on race day as we work towards improving care for the SCD community!
