Sheena's Place was conceived following the tragic death of Sheena Carpenter at age 22 after a long battle with an eating disorder. At Sheena's Place we offer hope and support to individuals, families and friends affected by eating disorders by providing a wide range of professionally facilitated support groups and services. We are committed to inspiring hope, reducing stigma, raising awareness and offering meaningful help and information at all stages of recovery.
Located in downtown Toronto, Sheena's Place is a non-institutional, non-residential centre where people with similar issues and concerns come together in groups to share experiences, thoughts, feelings, and coping strategies. There are groups for young adults, adults, mothers, women over forty and families, friends and partners of those with eating disorders. We recommend individuals attend an introductory information interview with us to enable them to choose the support group best suited to their needs. Individuals can access these free support groups within 72 hours of first contact.
Unfortunately, the need for Sheena's Place is not diminishing. Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness. Over 10% of people with anorexia will die from complications related to their disorder. According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, anorexia affects 1% to 2% of Canadian women between the ages of 15 and 25, and bulimia affects between 3% and 5% of Canadian women in this age group. That adds up to 85,000 sufferers in Ontario alone. Sheena's Place directly supported over 1,100 people affected by eating disorders in 2011. A recent survey revealed 90% of our clients constructively modified their behaviour after attending a support group.
Although we are a registered charity, we do not receive funding from the government and we are not a United Way agency. We rely on revenue from special events and the generosity and financial support of individuals, foundations and corporations.
On SUNDAY, OCTOBER 20, 2013 do your part in helping people affected by eating disorders by joining the Sheena's Place Team! Help us raise awareness and funds to continue providing those in need with a safe and supportive environment while dealing with eating disorders.
The first ten people to raise $1,000 for Sheena's Place will receive a re-imbursement of their entry fee. If you can't join us on that day, please consider doing your part by sponsoring a runner, or making a donation at www.sheenasplace.org.
