Help us kick our fundraising goals into high gear on Sunday October 19th, 2014 by walking, jogging, or running the 5K, half marathon or full marathon to support either the Creative Works Studio team or the Brain Angel team.
Join the Creative Works Studio team to ensure the existence of art in community mental health. Our goal is to raise $15,000 to help the members of the studio exercise their creative muscles.
Creative Works Studio is an arts-based occupational therapy program in Toronto's east-end, which promotes healing and recovery for people suffering from serious mental health and addictions issues. A drop-in day program, we serve approximately 80 clients and host 2500 visits per year.
Our approach is based on the integration of principles of occupational therapy, mental health, primary care, visual arts and vocational counseling. We support our members on their journey to self-expression through art, improved confidence and eventually increased participation within the larger community.
A research study conducted in 2008 at Creative Works Studio has shown the positive impact the studio has on members, including an improved sense of well-being, increased participation in other occupations, and renewed hope for the future.
One of our members says,
"I have suffered with severe mental illness since my teen years, I am now in my 50s. On my worst days, when I can barely get out of bed and everything seems to be too much I get on the subway and streetcar and go to 793 Gerrard Street. There, I am among friends, among people who have felt embarrassment and shame at having an illness we didn't ask for. I believe that programs like the Creative Arts Studio are what make St. Mike's a great hospital. St. Mike's cares for and elevates the poor and despairing sufferers of mental illness and pushes them to new heights through art and creation. Thank you for helping me when I needed it the most."
If you can't participate, consider sponsoring someone who is. You can donate directly to our team or help one of our members reach their individual goal.
Help the Brain Angel Team raise awareness and funds for brain injury prevention and treatment. Our goal is to raise $30,000 to help fund life-saving research being done by Dr. Cusimano and the (Injury Prevention Research Office) IPRO team.
If you can't make it out, you can still participate by encouraging and supporting others to walk, run, or jog a 5K, half marathon, or full marathon.
