ATTENTION—ROAD CLOSURES
Sunday 30th September 2007 (5:00am–2:00pm)
8th Annual Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon & Charity Challenge
Dear Wellington, Bay St., Front St., and Downtown residents and business owners:
I'm writing to advise you of our 8th Annual Waterfront Marathon and Charity Challenge on the morning of 30th September.
This year, we expect over 12,000 runners from more than 30 countries to come and make a multi-million dollar impact on the city.
As well, they will raise three quarters of a million dollars for 45 different Toronto charities. (see Charity Challenge page)
As always, we are working very closely with the City, the Police, the TTC, and the seven City Councillors with Waterfront Wards that the event passes through, to minimize disruptions and inconveniences.
Please peruse the following information carefully, to familiarize yourself with the closures and the detours we have put in place to minimize delays, and share the information with your residents, neighbours and customers.
For Downtown, the route is very similar to the past 3 years, with the Start/Finish venue at Metro Hall, and the actual formation and dispersal areas on Wellington from University to John.
Important Access Information:
- As always, Spadina Ave. will REMAIN OPEN ALL DAY for uninterrupted North-South and Gardiner Expressway access; as will Spadina on and off ramps to Gardiner. This is THE way in and out, as always on marathon day, for downtown traffic.
- Traffic from the West and East (Beaches) should access Downtown via Spadina off-ramps
- Traffic from the DVP southbound should take the Richmond St. exit
- Eastbound and Westbound downtown traffic can flow uninterrupted all day on Adelaide and Richmond—or on any street from King northwards, for that matter.
- Front St. traffic needs to get to Adelaide or Richmond, by going north on the streets East or West of Bay (e.g. on Spadina from the SkyDome or Intercontinental; or on Yonge from The Royal York or Union Station), then into or out of the downtown via Spadina ramps to Gardiner or Adelaide/Richmond ramps at the DVP.
- e.g. A Royal York patron going to the airport has the taxi go east on Front, north on Yonge, west on Richmond, south on Spadina, to the Gardiner on-ramp.
Street Closures:
- Formation area, on Wellington just West of Simcoe will be closed to thru traffic from 7-10am Saturday 29th (local access available)
- Formation area, on Wellington from University to John, will be closed from 5am to 2pm, Sunday 30th
- Wellington from University to Bay, and BAY ST., from Wellington to Lakeshore Boulevard will be closed to traffic from 5am to 2pm race-day
- Front St. from Church to Parliament, and Parliament from Front to Lakeshore, will be closed from 6:30am to 8:30am (Front St. from Church to Jarvis westbound lanes will remain open)
- Lakeshore Boulevard from Windermere to Don Roadway—from 5am to 11am West of Bay St., and from 5am to 2pm from Bay to Don Roadway
Get involved and help our charities raise money: Oasis Neighbourhood Challenge
Each of the 10 neighbourhoods along the route will be providing entertainment for the runners and spectators. On the morning of the 30th, a team of celebrity judges will determine which neighbourhood has built the best Oasis Neighbourhood Entertainment and Cheering Centre—who has the most vibrant neighbourhood on the Waterfront.
The Marathon will then present $5,000, $2,500 and $1,000 cheques to the charities associated with the top 3 ONCs!
Please encourage all your residents/customers to come out and enjoy the fun on the 30th, especially at one of the ONC locations, and to definitely put a pledge on their favourite runner, to help a neighbourhood charity!
Sincerely,
Alan Brookes
Race Director
