ATTENTION—ROAD CLOSURES
Sunday 30th September 2007 (6:00am–12:00noon)
8th Annual Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon & Charity Challenge
Dear fellow Queen's Quay residents and business owners:
I'm writing to advise you of our 8th Annual Waterfront Marathon and Charity Challenge on the morning of 30th September.
This year, we expect over 12,000 runners from more than 30 countries to come and make a multi-million dollar impact on the city.
As well, they will raise over three quarters of a million dollars for 45 different Toronto charities. (see Charity Challenge page)
As always, we are working very closely with the City, the Police, the TTC, and the seven City Councillors with Waterfront Wards that the event passes through, to minimize disruptions and inconveniences.
As a resident and property owner in 550 Queen's Quay myself, I have a special interest in working with my neighbours and friends to make sure everything goes smoothly on the 30th.
Please peruse the following information carefully, to familiarize yourself with the closures and the detours we have put in place to minimize delays, and share the information with your residents and customers.
Important Access Information:
- As always, Spadina Ave. will REMAIN OPEN ALL DAY for uninterrupted North-South and Gardiner Expressway access; as will Spadina on and off ramps to Gardiner. This is THE way in and out, as always on marathon day.
- Westbound lanes of Queen's Quay will remain open all day.
- Gardiner Eastbound can also be accessed from Queen's Quay via Rees and on-ramp off Lakeshore just east of Rees.
- Stadium Road northbound will be open, to an eastbound curb-lane of Lakeshore to Spadina and Rees on-ramp. Two pay-duty officers at Spadina off ramp and Lakeshore eastbound at Spadina, will allow northbound, left turns from Lakeshore East to Spadina northbound, then also Gardiner Westbound with a legal U-turn at Bremner.
- On Queen's Quay Eastbound from Spadina to Parliament, we will cone down the skip line, with the curb lane being for runners and the passing lane as a BUFFER lane. This will NOT allow for through traffic, but will allow traffic exiting from locations like 401 Queen's Quay or the QQ Terminal Parking lot, that do not have left turn options because of the streetcar tracks, to travel half a block in the buffer lane to the nearest intersection, then be U-turned into the westbound lanes of QQ, to exit QQ via Spadina.
- Pay-duty officers will be at all intersections and major building access/egress points to safely direct traffic through the gaps in the runners, e.g. at Bathurst, Rees, York, Harbour Square.
Street Closures:
- Queen's Quay eastbound lanes from Stadium Road to Parliament/Lakeshore, from 7:30am to 11am
Get involved and help our charities raise money: Oasis Neighbourhood Challenge
Each of the 10 neighbourhoods along the route will be providing entertainment for the runners and spectators. On the morning of the 30th, a team of celebrity judges will determine which neighbourhood has built the best Oasis Neighbourhood Entertainment and Cheering Centre—who has the most vibrant neighbourhood on the Waterfront.
The Marathon will then present $5,000, $2,500 and $1,000 cheques to the charities associated with the top 3 ONCs!
Please encourage all your residents/customers to come out and enjoy the fun on the 30th, especially at one of the ONC locations, and to definitely put a pledge on their favourite runner, to help a neighbourhood charity!
Sincerely,
Alan Brookes
Race Director
