Mexican Runners to the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon
by Rubén Romero
The Maratón Powerade Monterrey, which is run in Monterrey in December of every year, is pleased to announce a partnership with the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon, which takes place in September of every year in Canada.
Alan Brookes, Race Director of the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon, the most festive and colourful of the marathons of Canada, formalized the alliance last March in Monterrey with Gerardo Cervantes, director of the Maratón Powerade Monterrey, in which four of the five fastest female times of 2006 were registered in Mexican territory.
This coming September 30th a number of Mexican runners will be participating in the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon. Among these runners will be the winners of a raffle which took place at the Monterrey Marathon last December, which consisted of a trip with all expenses paid to participate in the Canadian marathon. These runners are Juan Compean, Genaro Villa, Maria Martinez, and Jacobo Garcia, who will be accompanied by Martha Tamez, president of the Association of Runners of Nuevo Leon.
The participation of runners in the Monterrey Marathon grew more than 70% last year, the first year Embotelladoras Arca became the main sponsor of the event. With the sponsorship came prize money in cash of over 2.6 million pesos, or US$240,000.
The Monterrey Marathon is quickly becoming one of the fastest in Mexico because of the city's low altitude, which is just 530m above sea level, because of its temperate climate in December, and because of its flat route.
The organizers of the Maratón Powerade Monterrey have made a commitment to grow the event into a major tourist destination, taking into consideration the close proximity of the United States as well as all the many tourist attractions of the City. The address of the Marathon Powerade Monterrey is: www.maratonmonterrey.com.
