Toronto. 1st October 2007. Team GB were crowned Scotiabank International Team Challenge Champions at Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon '07 yesterday, after being bridesmaids the last 2 years in a row. This was the third year for the ITC, that is growing rapidly in international recognition and prestige as a great opportunity for "developmental", up-and-coming athletes.
New for 2007, the competition made use of the Mercier Scoring Tables which allowed each athlete's time to be scored, then the best 3 performances to count. This was a considerable improvement over previous years, allowing for injury or just a bad day for one team member.
Alice Braham led the victorious Brits with a 2:41:06, good for 805 points, with the two GB men running a strategically smart race—running the entire race together, both crossing the line in 2:18:57, good for 785 points apiece and a winning team tally of 2,375.
The best sportsman/woman award undoubtedly goes to Equipo Mexico, last year's champions, and this year's runner-up with 2,308 points. Although the Mexicans brought two late additions to their squad, Edilberto Mendez and Ariano Quino, they did not try to force them onto their 4-person team or into the scoring. Mendez ran a scorching 2:15:05, good for 6th overall in the race. Had they pushed to include Mendez on their squad, his sparkling 841 point performance would have given them 2,422 points and the title. Well done, Team Mexico, and great sportsmanship!
A rejuvenated host, Team Canada had a fine debut marathon by Vancouver's Jerry Ziak [2:17:24, good for 807, the best score of any counter], and solid outings from Lisa Harvey and Janelle Morrison, both from Calgary, to place a strong third with 2,272 points.
Despite a strong PR outing from Minnesota's Melissa Gacek [2:45:06], that qualified her for the US Olympic Trials in Boston next April, the Team America/USA squad was much weakened by the US Men's Trials being in New York on November 3rd. The Americans finished 4th with 2,156 points, and look forward to fielding a much stronger team for '08.
