Are you up for "The Penguin" Charity Challenge?

John Bingham

If you're not quite ready for the full monty of 42k at this year's Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon, why not join Runner's World columnist John "The Penguin" Bingham and over 6,000 others in the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront HALF Marathon (21k), and take up his Challenge: for everyone who beats him in the run, he'll donate a dime to Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team in Training charity programme.

John has been called the Pied Piper of the current running boom, and for good reason. Since his "Penguin Chronicles" began in RW in 1996, he has become the guru of "marathoning for mortals", and the champion of slower running as a lifestyle panacea for everyone.

His talks are both hilarious and inspirational. You can catch his presentations at the EXPO, at the pasta Dinner, then run with (ahead of) him on race day.

John is often quoted as saying how enjoyable slower running and walking is, "and if it's so much fun, why do you want to hurry up and get it over with? Slow down and enjoy it!... Pre-race food/what to eat..? I don't worry about it. I take some money and if I get hungry I stop and buy something."

But the "Challenge" is on, and he's currently at a secret training venue in Chicago with Coach Jenny Hadfield, feverishly preparing for the 25th! There'll be no stopping for breakfast or even a cappuccino (a favourite of John's in the London Marathon) this year!
