September 29, 2006 (Toronto, ON) - 17 Performances... 6 Hours... 1 Great Charity! That is what it took for NAAAP Toronto and the Mon Sheong Foundation to win first-place honours at the 2006 Oasis Neighbourhood Challenge, part of the recent Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon [Sunday September 24th].
Don Roadway and Lakeshore Boulevard were transformed as the Little Asia/Chinatown section got down to some serious cheering, entertainment and great community spirit! ...and it paid off, as they walked away with a first-place cash prize of $5,000.00, awarded by the Neighbourhood Challenge sponsor A. Lassonde and their OASIS Pure Fruit Juices.
Judges for this years challenge included Marissa Schroder (Publisher – Get Out There Magazine), Danny Tam (Director of Marketing for Lassonde/OASIS) and Gino Latini (Board Of Directors for Festival & Events Ontario). The Judges all agreed it was an incredible experience: "All the different cultural themes brought colour, enthusiasm, and a high-energy-level of support for all the runners. Every cheering station was like its own mini festival!"
Race Director Alan Brookes offered "Congratulations to our three prize winners, and to all 10 neighbourhoods and charities who did such a marvelous job of energizing their neighbourhoods, and showing runners from around the world what a fabulous, vibrant and culturally rich city we have—one that embraces health and fitness, and one that cares and gives back to our neighbourhoods and families. This year's Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon raised more than $750,000 for local charities. Now that's something to cheer about!"
Second prize ($2,000.00) went to last years Challenge winners the York Lions Steel Band who were located on Commissioners Street with a Caribbean theme; while a third prize (of $1,000.00) went to Community Air located in the Harbourfront, who had a Canadian and "clean, green Waterfront" theme.
Award and cheque presentations will take place on Wednesday October 11th at the Mon Sheong Long Term Care Centre at 7:00 p.m.
