Koren Yal, Mare Dibaba duel delivers yet more records for Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon — The marvellous duel between Ethiopians Koren Jelela Yal and Mare Dibaba for the women's title at this year's Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon produced not only a thrilling race but a new Course and Canadian All-Comers Record of 2:22:42.5 and a pending African Record for 30K of 1:38:33. "Officially AMAZING" — Guinness reports World Records set at STWM — Last Sunday saw Guinness World Records partner with the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon (STWM) to give runners the opportunity to set official Guinness World Records in the both the 42.2K marathon and the half marathon (21.09 kilometres). Was Ed Whitlock's 80+ WR THE finest performance of an astonishing day? — Whitlock shatters his own age-class record in T.O. — It takes an awful lot for Ed Whitlock to put aside even a bit of his modest demeanour. Yesterday morning's performance qualified as one of those rare occurrences — just barely. “Yes, I guess it was the best one I've done this year,” said the always soft-spoken, humble Miltonian, expressing a little more satisfaction than is usually conveyed after one of his world record-setting runs. “I'm quite pleased with my finish, especially given the weather conditions, which were hardly ideal.” full story »

100-year-old marathoner sets record in Toronto — Fauja Singh finishes in 8 hours to become oldest person to complete full marathon — Fauja Singh secured a spot in the Guiness World Book of Records on Sunday at the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon. The 100-year-old accomplished an amazing feat, completing the gruelling 42.195-kilometre marathon and becoming the oldest person ever to complete a full-distance marathon. full story »

Canadians Coolsaet and Gillis qualify for London Olympics at 2011 Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon — TORONTO, Oct. 16, 2011 /CNW/ - Today was a spectacular day for Canadian pride at the 2011 Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon (STWM), with Canadian runners Reid Coolsaet and Eric Gillis qualifying for the London Olympics. Fauja Singh One Hundred Years Young — by Paul Gains — On the occasion of his 100th birthday — April 11th of this year — Fauja Singh received a telegram from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II then plotted world centenarian record attempts on distances from 100 metres to the marathon. MARATHON FLAME, Laurel Wreaths returning from GREECE to bring “The Spirit of the Marathon” to Canada for Scotiabank TORONTO Waterfront Marathon weekend, Oct. 14–16 — Last year, the Marathon Flame and 6 Laurel Wreaths made of olive branches from trees at the Battlefield of Marathon site came from Greece to mark the 2,500th Anniversary of the first marathon run by Pheidippides in 490 BC, over the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon weekend. The Flame returns this year, first to Chicago, then onto Toronto Waterfront, to return carrying the ideals, the values, and The Spirit of the Marathon Movement. Ambitious Dibaba Looking for Ethiopian Olympic Place — The Contenders, Part 4: by Paul Gains — With defending Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon champion Sheron Cherop representing Kenya at the 2011 IAAF World Athletics Championships in Daegu, Korea, last week (and winning the bronze medal!) the women's STWM race ought to be wide open. But nobody needs to tell Mare Dibaba that. The 21 year old Ethiopian has been on a tear since her debut marathon in Rome in March 2010 where she ran 2:25:38. Coolsaet Close to Olympic Berth — The Contenders, Part 1: by Paul Gains — Reid Coolsaet never imagined he'd be on the brink of an Olympic Games berth when he ran cross country for Hamilton's Westdale Secondary School back two decades ago. A mediocre athlete, whose goal was nothing more than joining his girlfriend in qualifying for the provincial high school cross country championships, Coolsaet finished 18th in the 1997 race. Coolsaet, Pidhoresky notch impressive wins at ACURA Toronto 10 miler — Reid Coolsaet showed why he's Canada's #1 ranked marathoner and the man to beat at the de facto “Olympic Trials” at Scotia Toronto Waterfront on October 16th, as he cruised to a comfortable victory at this morning's ACURA Toronto 10 miler in 48:34. Tecumseh, Ontario's Dayna Pidhoresky made equally easy work of the women's race, crossing the line in 56:32, a minute 40 seconds clear of Ethiopian Aselefech Asefa and almost 2 minutes clear of 3rd place Lucy Njeri of Kenya (58:24). full story »
