Marathon Flame Lighting & Opening Ceremonies

ntrc marathon flameJoin us on Thursday October 20th for the official kick-off to Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon weekend, hosted by the Greek Town BIA on The Danforth.

The first-ever “Marathon run” took place in 490 BC when a brave Athenian soldier-messenger named Pheidippides ran 40 kilometres from the battlefield at Marathon to Athens, to carry the news of a famous Greek victory.  In 2007, The “Marathon Flame” was established to burn as a symbol of world peace, and to spread the ideals of the Marathon around the world — the spirit of fair competition and the promotion of participation in sports as way of life.

Revel in the Spirit of the Marathon by cheering on relay runners who will carry the flame from Alexander the Great Parkette, along the Danforth, and back. The Flame Lighting Ceremony will also feature ‘live’ Greek music and entertainment!

The Marathon Flame, a symbol for world peace, fair competition, and participation in sports as a way of life, will be carried by Pheidippides as well as runners from local Toronto Running Clubs!
